What is Recovery & Complementary Care coverage?
In addition to our core Trupanion coverage, your pet can have even more protection with our Recovery and Complementary Care package. This optional rider provides coverage for alternative treatments that go above and beyond normal veterinary medicine.
What it covers

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific points in the body to cause a desired healing effect.

Behavioral modification
Behavioral modification is a systematic approach to changing behavior, which includes a pet’s reaction to a situation, person, object, animal, etc.

Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to aid in the healing and/or conditioning of a patient. A pet can swim in a pool or tank, or walk on an underwater treadmill.

Rehabilitative therapy
Rehabilitative therapy is the use of therapeutic exercises and other healing modalities to help pets recover from health conditions resulting from illness, trauma or surgery.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is based on the use of specially prepared, refined solutions of natural substances that are intended to trigger a healing response in the animal.

Naturopathy
Naturopathy is a way to treat diseases that avoids drugs and surgery and instead emphasizes the use of natural agents (air, water, herbs, etc.) and physical means (tissue manipulation and electrotherapy).

Chiropractic treatment
Chiropractic adjustments include spinal manipulation and/or manual therapy to induce healing.
As with all Trupanion coverage terms, alternative treatments must be given by or provided under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. These treatments likewise are not eligible for coverage if the condition being treated is pre-existing.
Why is Trupanion’s Recovery & Complementary Care optional?
Trupanion’s core coverage is there for unexpected medical issues that come up during your pet’s lifetime. The Recovery and Complementary Care package is there for continuing healing after your veterinarian’s first course of treatment ends:
- After an accident, physical therapy or hydrotherapy can help get your pet back on their paws after any surgeries or treatment.
- If your pet is eating something they shouldn’t, alternative treatments and behavioral therapy can help correct issues after the item leaves their system.

How alternative therapy can help

When Halle heard an interesting sound while out on an evening walk with her owner, she ran to investigate and jumped through a broken window, lacerating her tendon. She was quickly taken to the veterinarian, but had weeks of physical therapy and rehabilitation ahead of her. Fortunately, Halle was a Trupanion member and had the Recovery and Complementary Care coverage on her policy. After hydrotherapy, shock treatment, acupuncture and more, Halle was well on her way to recovery
