Simon Cowell

A Pet Parent’s Story

For the ones who never leave your side

Dinner at Simon’s is a negotiation. Diddly finishes first and moves on to Squiddly’s bowl. Daisy has to be coaxed, one handful at a time, and told again and again that it’s okay. This is Simon Cowell at home, among the dogs who quite rightly run the place.

The dogs behind the story

Meet the Crew

Squiddly

Squiddly

Yorkshire terrier

Squiddly can find a chew she buried months ago, and when Simon talks to her, she talks back. Nurse Squiddly also knows when someone isn’t feeling well. After Simon broke his back, she stayed beside him for three months.

Diddly

Diddly

Yorkshire terrier

Diddly wins dinner by a mile, and his interest does not end at his own bowl. Hand him a chew and he turns into Godzilla. He’s also Simon’s soft spot, and the reason why is further down this page.

Daisy

Daisy

Mixed-breed rescue

Someone set Daisy on Simon’s lap at a fundraiser, and that settled it. She came home frightened and stayed shy for months, until the day her ears came up and her tail started going. Simon counts it among the most rewarding moments a dog has ever given him.

Pebbles

Pebbles

German Shepherd

Pebbles adores Simon’s son, Eric, and the feeling is mutual. She sleeps on his bed, and is so alert that nothing gets past her. As Simon puts it, Eric has his own security team.

“I can’t imagine my life without animals.”

They have always been there

He has had pets through every version of his life.

Simon grew up around animals, and through every high and low since, his dogs have been there for him.

“They look after you, you gotta look after them. That’s how it works.”

On the day we filmed, the dogs set the schedule. The interview paused when one of them needed water or wanted to play. It paused again whenever Simon broke off mid-sentence to tell Daisy she was adorable, then picked the thought back up as if nothing had happened.

“Before we adopted her, Daisy lived on a beach. Put her on sand and the crabs run for their lives.”

Simon has had a lot of success in his life. Ask him what matters most, and it’s his family, two legs and four.

“I’ve spent a lot of money [on vets] over the years. Just like we go to the doctor’s, pets need vets.

The dog Simon thought he was
about to lose

It was fifty-fifty

The dinner thief has history. When Diddly was seven or eight, he became so ill that Simon remembers the odds as fifty-fifty, and remembers thinking, “That’s it.”

A vet diagnosed him with lymphoma, and he had to have his spleen removed. Then came the slow recovery. Diddly was too weak to feed himself, so Simon held him and fed him from his finger until his strength came back. “He’s a strong little boy,” Simon says.

“Diddly got really ill… to the point where I thought we probably would lose him. Thank God we had a fantastic vet.”

Four years on, the dog Simon once fed by hand now clears his own bowl and starts on Squiddly’s, while Simon objects and laughs at the same time. It is hard to imagine a happier ending than a dog sneaking two dinners.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The shoot could wait. Pebbles couldn't.

Shortly after the crew arrived, Simon noticed Pebbles wasn’t herself. Her tail was down, her ears were down, and she had tucked herself into a corner. He didn’t know if it was an emergency, and he wasn’t going to wait to find out. He called the vet, who said to bring her in right away. The shoot could wait.

Pebbles came home several hours later. She had some water, and Simon could see she was already feeling better. Within the hour, the only disagreement between them was over a ball she had no intention of giving back.
