Understanding pet insurance
What every pet parent needs to know about veterinary costs
Here's what most people don't realize: that adorable puppy or kitten comes with a lifetime cost of care that can climb past $30,000. And when emergencies strike? Cancer treatment can reach $15,000 or more. A torn ACL? $3,500–$6,400 on average. Even "simple" foreign body surgery (like when they eat something they shouldn't) can run $3,500–$8,000.

Pet parent FAQ
Check out our insurance FAQs or call us at 855.518.1410. In the meantime here’s what we are often asked:
- Age: Older pets are more prone to health issues, so premiums are typically higher at enrollment for older pets.
- Breed: Some breeds are predisposed to certain conditions, leading to higher coverage costs. Larger breeds may also incur higher costs due to increased medication or treatment needs.
- Location: Regional differences in veterinary costs and common pet health concerns can influence premiums.
- Coverage level: More comprehensive coverage has a higher premium, but provides much broader protection.
Age
Cats and dogs under 14 years old are eligible to enroll for lifelong coverage. Whether you have a lively puppy, an adventurous kitten, or a senior pet, there's a great chance they can qualify for protection under our generous age limit.
Geographic Location
To be eligible for Trupanion coverage, you must reside in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, or on any U.S. military base worldwide. This wide coverage area ensures that most North American pet owners can take advantage of our services.
Type of Pet
While we adore all animals, Trupanion currently provides coverage exclusively for cats and dogs. However, unlike some other pet insurers, we have no breed restrictions!
