Fall isn’t just the season of pumpkin-spiced lattes — it’s also the perfect time to get outside with your pup, spend some quality time together, and enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer. In need of some ideas to get started? Check out these fall-themed activities for dog parents looking for canine-friendly ways to celebrate autumn with their pups.

8 fall activities for dogs

Sure the weather might be getting chilly, but that doesn't mean you have to spend the rest of the year laying around indoors. There’s no better way to enjoy the season than participating in some of the best fall activities for dogs with your furry friend by your side.

1. Hiking

The colors are radiant, and the air is crisp, so now is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with your pup! But before heading out, check to make sure dogs are permitted on your chosen trail. Always bring:

  • A leash: most trail regulations stipulate that dogs must be leashed
  • Fresh drinking water for both of you
  • Something yummy to munch on
  • Bags to scoop your dog’s poo

Pro tip: be sure to pack a pet first aid kit to avoid any pet paw injuries!

2. Visit a pumpkin patch

While your dog probably isn’t interested in picking pumpkins, they’ll undoubtedly enjoy walking around the pumpkin patch with you. Just check with the pumpkin patch’s owner beforehand to make sure the location is dog-friendly, and always keep your pooch on a leash.

Speaking of pumpkin, did you know many dogs enjoy the taste of this classic fall flavor? Try adding a dollop of plain (no spices or sugar) canned pumpkin to your dog’s food for a dose of antioxidants and soothing digestive qualities.

3. Apple picking

Looking for a great way to take in the fall colors with your pup while stocking up on a favorite fall fruit? Consider visiting a dog-friendly apple orchard! Strolling along the trees while picking out some choice produce is a great way to get in some gentle exercise and some fresh air while spending quality time with your pet.

When you get home, you can even make a dog-friendly apple treat for your pup. Just don't feed your dog any whole apples or large apple chunks — the seeds can be toxic due to a compound called amygdalin, and the apple cores themselves pose significant choking hazards.

4. Camping

Summer is usually thought to be camping season, but you can extend this activity into fall with the right preparation and gear. Autmn can actually be the perfect time to go camping with your pet, as the cooler evenings create an ideal atmosphere for getting cozy with a furry companion. Whether glamping in an RV or roughing it in a tent, be sure you give your pup a comfy, warm space for the chillier nights. To be safe, always check the weather beforehand, and keep your dog close by at all times. If you've never taken your dog camping before or your pet has dealt with a recent health condition, consult with your veterinarian first.

5. Baking fall dog treats

You enjoy fall baked goods, so why shouldn't your dog? No, your pal can't enjoy all the same treats as you.

However, you can let them indulge in a dog-safe goodie now and then (with your veterinarian's approval, of course). Check out this pumpkin bread for dogs recipe from Spoiled Hounds. You may also want to consider dressing things up with some fall-themed cookie cutters to make any dog treat you make extra special.

6. Corn maze adventuring

Getting lost in a corn maze becomes a whole lot easier with your dog helping to navigate your way to the end. Corn mazes are a staple of fall fun and are sure to be an enjoyable experience for you both. As with other seasonal outings, be sure to check first to make sure that the corn maze venue is pet-friendly.

7. Trick-or-treating

Participating in Halloween activities is ideal for collecting sweet treats while allowing your dog to strut his stuff in costume. Plus, neighborhoods often will have dog treats ready and waiting.

And if you're not into making the neighborhood rounds, check out local festivities and pet costume contests for a memorable fall experience.

8. Running a dog-friendly 5K

In addition to the season’s scenic beauty, the cooler autumn temperatures are perfect for exercising outside with your dog. A creative way to do this is to participate in a dog-friendly 5K! You can promote the health of both you and your furry friend, get out for an adventurous day, and support a good cause. After the race, be sure to reward your pup with some autumn-themed dog treats and refuel yourself with a crisp fall apple or a pumpkin baked good. It’s a win-win.

If you prefer to walk rather than run with your pet, don’t worry. You can walk most of the dog-friendly 5K races instead.

Stay safe during fall dog activities

No matter how you and your dog celebrate these dog-friendly activities, keep a close eye on your dog at all times, be sure to take fresh water with you, and always check them for ticks after spending time outdoors. On that note, you'll also want to keep up with routine flea and tick prevention care all season long (and throughout the year).

The more time you spend together doing new and exciting things will only help strengthen your bond with your dog. And don’t forget to take the proper time to rest and relax, too. Fall is still cozy season, after all.
